Latacunga Cemetery (Part 1)

Today Daniel traveled by himself by bus to explore Lago de Quilitoa, Ecuador's own "crater lake," a couple hours west of here. I didn't want that much bus riding so I stayed home and did some more exploring in Latacunga.

I must say this is not as interesting a place as the guide book makes it sound.

But I was enchanted with the cemetery I happened on.

So please indulge me with a two part post about it. The Latacunga cemetery is right near the centro, and covers a lot of ground. It combines traditional graves like those above with many long walls containing niches where coffins are entombed.

There are also free standing "coffin condos" like the one below that families have built.
The traditional graves in the ground with markers may be the least expensive and prestigious.

A lot of the markers seemed to be homemade, or were purchased and hand painted.
