Cocora Valley Trek (Part 1)

The Cocora Valley near Salento is renowned for its beauty. It features the wax palm, the Columbian national tree, that can grow up to 80 feet tall.

It was pouring rain when we left Saleto to begin what would be an all day hike.

But since this was our last day here, we donned our parkas and set out.

You get to the trailhead in a Jeep that cost a couple bucks for a ride.

The beginning of the trail through the valley is used mostly by horses and mules and is terribly rutted.

I had borrowed some rubber boots from my hostal, or I would not have made it.

At the end of the valley the trail starts to climb through an Andean cloud forest, a highland jungle.

We had to cross the Quindia River several times on rudimentary bridges made of cables and planks and a couple that were just two or three logs laid across the stream that was swollen by the rain.

Kind of scary, but I managed to do it.
