Our next destination on our day-long hike through the Cocora Valley was a nature preserve high up in the cloud forest.
It was staffed by an older couple who charged a couple bucks admission and served up a favorite Andean snack of hot chocolate and white cheese. It tasted good.
They also have lots of hummingbird feeders to attract many hummingbirds that were fun to watch.
After leaving the preserve we had to hike about a half mile straight up to a forest ranger station at the top of a mountain at about 9,400 feet.
This was not easy for me, but I took my time and eventually made it.
From there we were rewarded with about a four mile walk downhill on a wide dirt path following one ridge of the Cocora Valley.
It had finally stopped raining and there was some sunshine through the clouds.
Very pleasant.
This road had the best views of the scenic valley and the huge wax palms.
We got back to Salento late in the afternoon. I was totally exhausted, but proud of myself for making it still in one piece. I'm sure it will be hard getting out of bed tomorrow.
Hi guys, this is Al. I lived in Medallo (that what the locals call it) for 3 years so I know it well. As a librarian you might want to check out the library that spain gave to the city. It is easy to get to from the metro and the cable ride. Envigado is just a local bus ride away and it's a fun place to be. El Retiro is only one hour away and worth it. Yeah Colombian beer is lousy, try Clausen it is made from rice I believe. And pan de yuca and pan de bono are, well you'll see. Like I wrote before, Santa Fe de Antoquia is just fine. Tamarindo anyone?
ReplyDeleteThanks Al. Yes, we definitely plan to visit the Spanish library. Saw a picture and it looks amazing!
