Villa de Leyva in Pop Culture

Yes, Villa de Leyva did play a role in recent popular culture.

I understand a good deal of Werner Herzog's 1987 movie Cobra Verde was made here.

It was the last of the four movies he made that starred Klaus Kinski.

It based on a novel by Bruce Chatwin called The Viceroy of Ouidah.

I haven't seen it, but now I want to.

Also, one of Elvis' drummers, Bill Lynn, owned a bar here and died here in 2006.

There is a plaque to commemorate him.

Actually he only played drums on "It's Now or Never," one of the worst Elvis tunes, IMHO.

He also played drums in a couple of Elvis movies, though of course he music was dubbed in so he wasn't actually playing.

But I think he was well-loved in Villa de Leyva where his bar was called "Legends and Superstars" and included Elvis memorabilia. I wish it was still in operation.

BTW, if you happen to die in Villa de Leyva and your remains are handled by the local funeral home you get one of these neat posters posted in several locations in town.
