A Walking Town

Like lots of cities in Latin America, Quito is a great walking town.

The central plaza is the Plaza de la Independencia and it's great for just hanging out and for people watching.
There are a number of pedestrian-only streets in the Old Town and there is a good bus system including express buses with dedicated lanes. The bus fare is 25 cents to get anywhere on the express buses.

Quito has a law that forbids car owners to use their car one day a week (based on their drivers license number). That forces people to discover other ways to get around. I think it's a great idea.
