I have only been in Cuenca a day and I have purchased two music CDs after seeing the bands perform in public.
The first band, Los Claves (the Keys) were playing at the birthday party in Parque Calderon last night.
They played mostly what I believe are called cumbias in Ecuador. There is a Mexican version of the cumbia that is similar.
The beat is the same as what you would do with your hands on your lap to mimic a horse galloping.
Anyway, Los Claves were great and I bought their CD for $2.
Today in the central Mercado we saw Victoria Lema and her partner on accordion serenading the shoppers with her versions of the cumbia.
They were great too and another $2 changed hands.
