Cuenca has the reputation of being the most beautiful colonial city in Ecuador and I think Daniel and I would agree.
It is certainly the most beautiful city we have seen on our trip.
The colonial center has been well preserved, and it still serves as a destination for Cuencanos.
This is not so much the case with the historic center of Quito. The Tomebamba River goes through the center of the city and the old city is right on the river. Our hostal is right off Calle Larga that follows the river and is a lively street with bars and restaurants.
Just across the river is the University of Cuenca, and lot of students cross the river to patronize the Calle Larga establishments.
Where Quito is a bit gritty and edgy and sometimes scary, Cuenca seems more polished and cultivated and relaxed. The mercado here is the best we have seen. More on that later.
BROWNIE POINTS: to the librarian or anyone else who can explain what is going on with this sculpture.
