Latacunga is a provincial capital city about two hours south of Quito.
Compared to Quito's 2.2 million population, Latacunga is very small at just over 50,000. It was founded in 1543 but it has had to be largely rebuilt five times, most recently in 1877, due to eruptions of Cotopaxi, Ecuador's second largest volcano.
Cotopaxi is only 15 miles away as the crow flies. We drove by it getting here, but we didn't see it, because it was covered in clouds.
There are not a lot of choices for places to stay. After checking out a couple places, including one without wi-fi we decided on a semi-splurge at the Hotel Rodelu. It is right in the center of town. The wi-fi is really good and they have their own restaurant with a wood oven for making pizza, which sounds really good after a week of Ecuadorian food. The cost? $24 a night.
We'll just be here two nights and then it is on to Banos.
