The mercado in the central historic district of Cuenca is a large modern two-story building that takes up an entire city block.
It's the best mercado we have been to on the trip. Quito might have a market this good, but we didn't find one.
I like nothing better than to wander the aisles and marvel at the fresh fruits and vegetables and imagine myself living here and being able to eat this wonderful food.
So much quality and variety.
Many of the fruits and vegetables are a complete mystery. Daniel and I decided we need to try at least one mystery fruit every day (more on that later).
This, for example, is called a "tree tomato" (tomate de arbol) here and it is made into juice that we have tried.
Very delicious.
