Daniel and I spent our first day in Quito knocking around the Old Town. I was taking it easy, as you are supposed to do when you are an older guy coming from sea level to a town at 9,400 feet.
Not surprisingly, I managed to find the public library in Old Town.
I think I have developed something of an instinct for finding libraries. It is inside a larger cultural center. There is a new part, that looks to be of pretty recent construction and an older part.
Like many libraries outside the US, they have not begun to abandon the old design of having a separate room for each subject area. The new part of the library pictured here was devoted entirely to science, something I imagine they are trying to promote for students here. There were a lot of public access internet computers throughout the library. Most of the patrons appeared to be students. Like a lot of the libraries I have been to in Mexico this one appeared to serve more as a reference library and study space for students, and not so much a circulating library.
I did find the design of the new part of the library to be very attractive and inviting.
