Colombian Panaderias

Panaderias (bakeries) in Colombia are amazing. They go all out.

They bake breads, pastries, cakes, and Colombian specialties like various kinds of empanadas and arepas. They serve good coffee. Many bake pizza and offer sandwiches, fruit juices and full meals.

They are big with lots of seating.
There is one right across the street from our hostal. Here is what we had today for breakfast. Two good cups of coffee, two kinds of savory empanadas and an arepa.

Daniel and I have yet to understand the fondness for arepas here. They seem pretty bland to us. Maybe we need to eat them with something stuffed in the middle.

Eating in a panederia is cheap. The coffees are about 60¢ and the baked goods are about the same.

The tab for this was less than $3.

  2. Most people here seem to eat them plain. They already have some cheese in them.

So far it appears people in Columbia eat even less veggies than in Ecuador. They eat a lot of bread. We are going to have to try hard to get our veggies.
