Villa de Leyva as touted as one of the most beautiful colonial towns in Colombia and we would have to agree.
It is located a couple hours north of Bogota and is apparently a favorite weekend destination for Bogotanos. Some have second homes here. But we got here on a Monday, and the town was very quiet and devoid of tourists. There are some good restaurants here and we had not had a good meal, really, since we left Medellin. So we decided to treat ourselves.
A guy at our hostel who has been here for several months recommended a place called Matisse. He said it had the best beef he had had in Colombia. That all sounded great to us, having subsisted for the last few days on fried pork and fish and potatoes and rice and yucca, not to mention arepas, which I have now developed a full-blown aversion toward.
We ordered the patatas bravas above as an appetizer. They weren't all that brava (meaning hot), but they tasted good with the bottle of Chilean Cabernet we splurged on. The beef dish was really good. Steak finished with a red wine, tomato and chorizo sauce. There was also a nice salad and a side of lightly sauteed vegetables (please click on the picture to see how good this looked; it tasted great too).
Our bill for all this great food and wine was only about $50.
