Uvillas

Daniel and I need to try these mystery fruits we see in the mercado while we can.

We bought a bag of these for a buck and were told they are called "uvillas." The name is Spanish for "little grapes" and they are about the size of grapes or cherry tomatoes.

You eat them whole (no seed to spit). They have a very unusual flavor. Tart and not too sweet with all kinds of other flavors going on in the background. A pretty high acid content.

Turns out they are related to the tomatillo and grow in a pod like a tomatillo.

They are native to the Andes where they can grow wild. They have only recently begun to be grown commercially. These may have been picked in the wild.
