The train trip from Ibarra to Salinas is only 18 miles, but takes about an hour and a half because it traverses the high Andes.
It's a beautiful trip through deep canyons and lush farmland.
We saw lots of corn, beans, tomatoes, cabbage and other vegetables growing.
As got closer to Salinas, sugar cane predominated.
This is the rainy season so everything is green and growing.
We understand later in the year, in the dry season, things will look different.
